Re: Human Subjects and Research Openness: Tensions and Dilemmas

[this is a repost from the marginalized and vulnerable populations thread] right now, i am running surveys of university faculty about perceptions of climate, attitudes toward diversity, social networks on campus, etc. the surveys ask questions about people's rank, field, and social identities. peop...

Re: Preregistration (or lack thereof)

Macartan Humphreys gave presentations about pre-registration at some of the DA-RT meetings and is still an advocate. I dont know much of the intellectual history beyond that (whether the proposals met with resistance, what the discussion was like, etc.). it is noticeable that it is not one of the AJ...

Re: [From Steering Committee] Interview-based research and the pros and cons of transparency

What Michelle said--"IRBs may vary in their consent protocols but in my case, at least, interviewees were required to receive an information sheet before the interview begins as an important part of the consent process. One of the things that my IRB requires is that information about how data w...

Re: [From Steering Committee] Active citation versus the meaty footnote

A few thoughts: --Meaty (or thorough) footnotes for qualitative work are ALREADY the equivalent of the new transparency and data access standards for quant work. Meaty footnotes point the reader to the data from which the ideas and conclusions in the article or book came, and enable the inquisitive ...

[quote="ilustick"]If editors are unwilling to assign credibility to judgments offered by the scholars who submit manuscripts for publication unless those scholars meet requirements for transparency and replicability, then how can those editors assign credibility to the scholars who offer p...

Re: AJPS badges

Wow. im digesting all of this. i am immediately concerned about the badges privileging and creating additional incentives for certain types of research that are amenable to immediate sharing of digitized data, while denigrating and dis-incentivizing others. It is hypothetically possible that badges ...

DARE! Love it.
im not optimistic about changing an acronym already associated with sunk costs, but your reasoning is sound.\

is it possible to email people when others contribute to their thread?

sort of like a FB notification. this might improve continuity in the deliberations, since right now it's up to people to check back on their own to see if anyone has responded to their threads. thanks! mala

Re: Inviting input on specific transparency practices

FOOTNOTES!
I think we need to underscore the importance of proper and consistent footnotes as a transparency practice. Ideally, these would include page numbers where the information came from, which too many texts these days do not do.

Re: Beyond the qual/quant divide

you should check out the other thread about the costs of compliance with data access requirements. for work based on interviews, this would involve transcription and anonymization, which is time consuming and expensive. on that thread, several folks pointed out that the costs could be prohibitive and...

Data access--discourage original data production?

Finally, this discussion should analyze the incentives to produce original data: 1) How can access requirements be designed so as not to discourage production of original data? (Jones, 2015) Fewer scholars may be willing to incur the costs of providing this public good if the rest of the profession ...

Data access--human subjects protections

We also need to ask: 1) How will data access requirements respect human subjects protections? JETS states: “If cited data are restricted…authors must notify the editor at the time of submission. The editor shall have full discretion to follow their journal’s policy on restricted data, including decl...

Data access--costs and inequality

A separate concern raised by data access requirement is: 1) Who bears the costs of compliance with data access requirements for qualitative work? The costs involved with referencing, scanning, and linking to every archival source document (Snyder, 2014), or with anonymization of transcripts, may be ...

Data access--what is data and who decides?

People participating in this website need to discuss the issue of data access. JETS states that authors need to make their data available in order to get their work published. The data access requirement raises several concerns. An important one is: What counts as “data”? Data access is relatively e...
